School Tour
One of my earliest memories from childhood is a school tour. We went to Dublin Zoo and that was a big journey from Northern Ireland in those days! I can’t remember much about the trip itself, but I do remember the excitement of getting on the bus that morning and buying a little ornamental seal to take home for my mum. For many kids school tours are the highlight of the school year and it can be great fun getting out of the classroom. It also allows you to get to know your classmates and teacher a bit better, ideally whilst learning some new skills. From the schools’ perspective Outdoor Education provides a broad range of benefits for students that are difficult to replicate in a school environment. Recent research has indicated the benefits include: developing new skills; general happiness; respect for others & the environment; mental health; leadership; responsibility and adaptability to name a few! These benefits can last for the remainder of the students’ school career and beyond.
School tours and school trips
School tours and school trips come in many guises from educational field trips exploring specific subjects / areas to literary & arts, farm & wildlife tours, historical and sporting / outdoor. Some are necessary as per curriculum requirements others are perhaps to fill a gap in the educational timetable. Whatever the reason it can be difficult for teachers to come up with school trip ideas and also finding the time for planning a school trip. There are many school tour companies that have sprung up to assist teachers planning trips abroad and in Ireland.
