Carlingford Adventure Centre Celebrates 35 Years of Adventure

Carlingford Adventure Centre is celebrating 35 incredible years of adventure, growth, and innovation. Nestled in the heart of the picturesque town of Carlingford, the centre has become Ireland’s premier destination for outdoor activities – a success rooted in the vision and dedication of its founders, Tom and Mary McArdle.
Humble Beginnings
The story began in 1990 when Tom, inspired by his passion for windsurfing, and his wife Mary opened a small hostel and offered windsurfing lessons on Carlingford Lough. What started as a modest venture quickly grew into a bustling hub for adventure sports, driven by their love for the outdoors and commitment to sharing it with others.
Growth and Expansion
By 2003, their son Thomas had joined the family business, ensuring the continuation of their vision. In 2006, the McArdles expanded their educational reach by opening an English Language School, welcoming international students to Carlingford alongside their ever-popular summer camps.
Two years later, they established Carlingford Holiday Homes, giving families and groups the chance to stay longer and enjoy a full adventure experience.
Skypark and Adventure Lights
A major milestone came in 2014 with the opening of Skypark, Ireland’s largest aerial adventure park. With over 20 activities including high ropes courses and zip lines, Skypark became a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers of all ages.
In 2024, the centre launched its first-ever Adventure Lights event at Skypark. Running through the traditional off-peak season, this magical winter event guided visitors along an illuminated outdoor path featuring glowing statues, interactive activity zones, and unique installations. The event was an overwhelming success, and the centre has just announced the dates for Adventure Lights 2025, promising another enchanting seasonal experience.
Beyond the Trees
In 2022, Carlingford Adventure forged a landmark partnership with German company EAK, opening Treetop Walk Avondale in Co. Wicklow. Part of the Beyond the Trees Avondale project with Coillte and Fáilte Ireland, this world-class treetop walk and viewing tower has set a new standard for eco-friendly adventure tourism in Ireland.
Overcoming Challenges
Like many in the tourism industry, Carlingford Adventure faced hurdles including the foot and mouth outbreak, the financial crash, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet through resilience, innovation, and the support of their loyal staff and customers, the centre emerged stronger each time.
A Family Legacy Continues
A structured succession plan began with Thomas gradually taking over leadership. He is continuing his parents’ legacy pushing forward new ideas and ambitions. Looking ahead, Carlingford Adventure Centre is planning further treetop and activity locations across Ireland and the UK while continuing to innovate at home in Carlingford.
Community at the Core
More than just an adventure business, the centre is deeply woven into the local community and Ireland’s education system. From youth and family programmes to adult groups and corporate team-building, Carlingford Adventure has touched countless lives and inspired generations.
